Eagles defenders tackle a Rockdale Tiger

Rockdale Tigers got off to a fast, furious start of the football season, scoring three times in the first 10 minutes of the game against the visiting Salado Eagles on Aug. 30. Rockdale went on to win the season opener 47-21.

The Tigers had almost 500 yards total offense, most of it on the ground as Elijah Brooks had 102 yards on 15 carries, including a 13 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Clayton Gibbs started the 40-point first half for the Tigers, keeping the ball for a 13 yard touchdonw with 8:02 left in the first quarter to top a 10-play 83 yard drive.

After forcing Salado to a quick three-and-out, Rockdale scored 20 seconds later on a 25-yard run by Dailynn Ramey with 6:11 left in the first quarter. The point-after kick made it 14-0. Ramey had two touchdowns and 92 yards in the game on 10 carries.

The Tigers scored their third touchdown in the first quarter on an 84-yard drive that took 1:52 off of the clock. Clayton Gibbs hit an open Devante Burgess for a 45 yard pass and a 20-0 lead.

Salado finally answered on the next series, a six play 63-yard drive. McLane Carter found Jacob Little past the secondary and Little raced into the endzone for the 60-yard score with 2:12 left in the first. The PAT brought the score to 20-7.

The Tigers drove half the length of the field in four plays and 92 seconds to score their fourth touchdown of the first quarter. Gibbs threw to Austin Caeffy crossing into the endzone for a touchdown with 31 seconds remaining in the quarter. Adolfo Chavira added his third PAT kick for a 28-7 lead.

The Tigers tacked on two more touchdowns in the first half, on a 12 yard run by Ramey with 8:11 left in the half and an interception  by Hayden Offield and his return of 38 yards with just under 4 minutes left in the half.

Salado added a touchdown with 31 seconds left in the half. The Eagles drove 70 yards in 3:24. Ryan Simmons took a handoff on first down with 3:55 left in the half and ran it for 49 yards to give the Eagles the ball at the Rockdale 21 yard line.

After a false start call against the Eagles, Clayton Cole ran for 7 yards before the Tiger defenders Preston Ehler and Jakob Moreland sacked Carter twice to force a fourth-and-18 at the 29 yard line.

Carter hit Kase Spears for a touchdown pass with 31 seconds left in the half. Chase Crenwelge added the point-after to bring the halftime score to 40-14.


Each team scored a touchdown in the second half. 


The Eagles drove 66 yards in 12 plays to score after taking the second half kick off. Carter threw to Davis little for a 14 yard touchdown, followed by Crenwelge’s extra point kick to bring the score to 21-40.

The Tigers added their final touchdown on a 13 yard touchdown by workhouse running back Elijah Brooks. Brooks carried the ball 15 tiems for 103 yards.
