Salado Village Voice Guide to Lodging

Salado, as a village, has experienced a good fortune unlike other comparably sized communities. Its well-maintained historic homes number over a dozen, and while a few remain as private residences, such as the Robertson Plantation and the Twelve Oaks Mansion, and some are now restaurants, as is the case with The Range (Barton House), a good many have been converted to exquisite bed and breakfasts, giving guests the opportunity to rest their heads in the same place as many of the village’s founding fathers.

The Inn at Salado, another B&B located on Main St., holds the distinction of being the village’s very first bed and breakfast and dates back to approximately 1861. Otherwise known as the Norton-Orgain House, the inn was formerly owned by Col. Nimrod Norton, a Civil War veteran and pioneering Saladoan, and was also owned by John Orgain, and his wife Kate Alma. Kate was a well-known instructor at Salado College. Currently, the Inn at Salado boasts a Texas Historical Marker and a National Register Listing.

The Inn on the Creek also has an interesting past. The inn’s three-story Main House was constructed in 1892 in nearby Cameron, as a wedding gift from a saloon keeper to his new bride. The inn’s restaurant is also over a century old, as are the five guest rooms located in the Holland House, part of the inn’s complex. Situated on Center Circle on the banks of Salado Creek, the inn is one of the most picturesque getaways in the village, and has been featured in several travel magazines, as well as receiving many awards for excellence since opening over 18 years ago.

The Reue House, which is one of the accommodations of Old Salado Springs Center and Retreat on Royal Street, is one of the oldest structures in Salado. It was constructed without the use of nails. The wooden pegs used to join beams can be seen through exposed joints in the rooms.

Even those B&B’s that don’t occupy historic structures have won well-earned reputations for service and quality.

Stone Creek Settlement is located on College Hill, and contains hand-crafted cottages in the early Texas German style. The cottages are created from architectural finds and materials reclaimed from early Texas homes.  The early Texas and German Sunday Haus style cottages are tucked into a native landscape containing water ponds and walking trails.  Each cottage is creatively decorated with antique and handmade furniture, carved limestone, stained glass windows and handcrafted mouldings.
